A Surprising Tool To Help You Stay Motivated
Another week in the books for chasing our goals and trying to do big things!
It’s not all sunshine and rainbows though, and this one was no exception for me.
(Don’t worry this is not a “Dear Diary” post like many of the ones I get sick of seeing where they talk about how it was hard but still pushed through).
Side note: Twitter doesn’t seem to have as many of those, but LinkedIn is rampant with the posts about “wah wah my day was hard, but I’m going to rise above.”
“Authenticity” does not mean that you complain in public about every little thing you’re going through - maybe I’ll write a post about that…
Anyway…back to my point:
Maybe your week was hard, maybe not. Mine was only hard because I’m trying to get my new son to sleep through the night so I can get back to a “normal” schedule.
So why do I even bring it up?
It’s because it’s the perfect opportunity to show you how to keep some pep in your step and some ice cold aggression in your veins.
If you’ve been following me for a while, you’re already well aware of the fact that motivation isn’t enough.
You’re going to need a plan, support system, habits, etc.
But what if you’re just looking to lift your spirits a little?
Sure, I know to follow my plan and the action items from my goal sheet even if I don’t “feel like it.”
But the bottom line is, I’d rather have high spirits and a good attitude than feel down, defeated, or discouraged.
If you’re high on life, everything gets easier and the actions you take will likely be higher quality also.
So what do I do?
Unlock the power of the Kudos folder:
Things happen that make it tough to perform at a high level all the time:
Disappointing things happen
Deals fall through
People let you down
Accidents happen
So how do you keep your energy up when things aren't going your way?
Check out your Kudos Folder.
"Kudos," for our purposes, just means praise you've received for something.
What we're going to do is weaponize all of the praise we've received against ourselves.
Starting now, any time you receive a compliment or piece of praise, you're going to move it to the Kudos Folder.
I have 3 places I keep Kudos folders:
A folder in my email
A folder in my Google Drive
An album no my phone (for screenshots)
The truth is that you do great work and make a positive impact on a lot of people.
When that is acknowledged just hold onto it for a rainy day.
This is not about blowing up our own egos, this is about maintaining momentum around our purpose.
When I'm having a day that feels like the odds are stacked against me, I pull up the Kudos Folder.
I don't have to read through many compliments or reminders that I do good work and impact people's lives positively to turn my day around!
Even if it’s just your close friends giving you a compliment, if you can use it to build momentum, you need to save it and use it!
Make your folders and start storing some "positivity ammunition" to use on yourself when you need it!
Let the good vibes roll into every area of your life!
That’s all for now!
Your assignment, should you choose to accept it:
Make Kudos Folders in your email, photo album, Slack or whatever else you communicate on.
Start building your arsenal of good vibes this week!
I’m truly grateful for you being on this journey with me and it’s my honor to walk your path with you. I hope you found this helpful.
Forever Forward,
Rush
