"Get Your Head Out of The Clouds"
Good Morning Rogues!
Here’s to another week of chasing your dreams.
I’ve been really challenged this week about understanding myself, my partners, and the people around me between the difference between being able to dream big and being able to execute.
If I had to make a sweeping generalization (and I will), I would say that most people are predisposed to being highly skilled in only one of these areas.
Understanding the difference, why it matters, and where you fit can make a huge difference in being able to achieve your goals.
Who are the Dreamers?
You might be a dreamer if you’re often accused of having your “head in the clouds.”
Sometimes the criticism can be more subtle… you may have family and friends that encourage you to dial back your goals to “something more realistic” or they just don’t want to see you be “disappointed.”
Without going too deep into a tangent, I first need to say, if you’re a dreamer, disregard all of those opinions and find an executer who can help you get there.
Back to the point about dreamers…
Man never puts a plane in the sky without a dreamer.
Someone had to believe that something impossible was possible.
It doesn’t always have to be that audacious though.
Sometimes dreamers are people that imagine a new way that a business can serve its customers.
They can be big or small:
Pixar changing the way we experience animation
Wendy’s imagining a way for you to get your food without getting out of your car
Zappos understanding that shoe sales can be done online if you make returns easy.
The shortcomings of the dreamer are that they stop at the idea.
Just because you know something would work doesn’t mean you’ve made it or are serving customers.
The ability to bring it to life steps into a completely different skillset that I see lacking in a lot of dreamers.
Who are the Executers?
These are the guys and gals that love nothing more than to receive a plan and make it happen against all odds.
They could make anything happen “if they just had the right idea.”
They often thrive in positions like Operations or Project Management, if you find them in a corporate structure.
The entrepreneurial type of Executers often run into issues with getting their business started because they believe that the process is the thing.
They often miss the point on how to marry the vision and the needs of a customer to the thing itself.
Don’t be fooled though - these guys and gals are indispensable to highly successful teams.
Why does this matter?
Sure, I’ll concede that most people can do a little bit of both, and a VERY small amount of humans can do both at a high level (you’ve heard about all of these people in history books)…
But the big takeaway here is to take a look at yourself to try to understand where your true skillset lies.
Sure you may be able to work in or manage an operations team, but does that excite you or drain you?
Understanding where your hear lies will help you understand what shortcomings you need to overcome in yourself.
Also, if you’re looking to build something big, you need to pair yourself with a partner that has a complimentary style.
I’ve helped tons of partnerships start supplement brands that have both executers or both dreamers and both examples flop miserably.
*If you have two executers, they can set up the business to where all of the details are lined up and all the paperwork is complete, but they have no idea how to earn customers or ability to understand why no one cares about their product.
*If you have two dreamers, they typically can get started and earn a few customers, but they can’t stay focused on the things that matter long enough to maintain the business. They lack the ability to scale meaningfully which means they often lose their energy for the project and fold it up to try again on something more exciting.
If you know where you strength lies and you need a partner for a big project, find someone with a complimentary style.
If you’re a dreamer who doesn’t need or want a partner, you need to outsource the minutia. Get virtual assistants, bookkeepers, etc. and pay the labor cost of the execution. It will be worth it in the long run.
For me personally I skew towards “Dreamer” definitely, but I have worked very hard and studied to have the skillset needed to execute as well.
I know that long term staying focused on execution is something I need to outsource more of though.
I’d love to hear where you think you fit!
If you need help with resources for outsourcing or pairing your execution ability with a vision, I can help!
Every day this week, let’s take a moment to be grateful for a new day closer to a better day.
