I Doubt I Can Do It
Hey Rogues!
I hope you’ve had another great week getting closer to your dreams.
This week I’ve been constantly reminded about the fact that you wont always know the right direction, but the important part is to keep growing and evolving.
It can be terrifying not knowing if you’re moving in the right direction or not.
With my own business, there are weeks and months where the outcomes just don’t seem to match up with the effort we’ve been putting in.
I’ll question my approach, my knowledge, my ability to lead - everything.
And then the next breakthrough will happen.
My experience with entrepreneurship and growing a remote business has been one that has required courage, but the part I wasn’t as prepared for was the self doubt.
I thought for sure that if I brought enough courage, faith, and effort to the table, I would be able to overcome the self doubt and fear.
The truth is, the fear and self doubt is very real for me.
So what do I do?
I keep pushing and keep focused on the “open road.”
Easy to say, but what does that mean…
Just because I have fear doesn’t mean I have to do anything about it.
Your feelings are real, but that doesn’t mean that they matter.
I can look at the feelings I have as an opportunity to learn about myself.
Do I doubt my ability in a certain area and that’s upsetting me?
Good.
That means I’ve learned that it’s important to succeed in that area to me.
Now I have the ability to take action to improve or iterate a new option in that area.
If I sit in the doubt, that brings no one any good.
Sometimes your fears come to life, and it is time to pivot or change direction.
But if we’re not paying attention to the fear, and we’re paying attention to real outcomes, we have the opportunity to take action.
If we’re just watching the fear - we freeze - and we do nothing useful.
When learning to race cars at high speeds, the natural tendency for the human brain is to look at the approaching “dangers.”
It’s time to turn, but your brain wont let you take your eyes off of the wall that is coming at you very fast.
A fundamental lesson that you learn when learning to drive cars at high speeds is to look toward where you’re turning - don’t focus on the wall.
It can be so hard for driving students to break this pattern that instructors have been known to physically turn the heads of their students to the open road on high speed turns.
Let’s take that lesson for ourselves and for our teams.
Are you focusing on the approaching “wall” in your life instead of the open road?
Allow me to extend my metaphorical hands through the internet to help you turn your head toward the open road.
If you lead a team, keep them focused on the road ahead. Not the pothole, light poll, or wall headed your way.
Nothing useful can be done when we freeze because of incoming “danger.”
Let’s turn our eyes where we know they need to be for the week ahead.
Please keep me posted on how I can be of service to you, your career, or your business.
Let’s keep winning together!
Forever Forward,
Rush
